Loss and Love

Our beloved friend, pet and cruising buddy, Casey passed away yesterday. He was the greatest of all Golden Retrievers, ever! He is and will continue to be missed, sorely. His absolute love and constant and true companionship was always a comfort. Last Sunday I preached a sermon on God’s love for us where I stated that God loves us on purpose. I believe wholly and without reservation that Casey was a gift from God, on purpose. The most important thing to God is that we love each other unconditionally. Love is not a theory or a feeling; it’s about how you treat people. Love is not an emotion – it’s an action. We start loving people with our heart. But our action shows how we feel. Casey never failed to show how he felt for the people in his life. His heart was huge and pure and true.
Today the world seems diminished without Casey in it. I feel smaller. That’s how you feel when someone you love dies. But God has sent us the Comforter – His Holy Spirit to ease our loss and to help us see that Casey is now back in the loving hands of the One who sent him. I am thankful that I got to spend time with one of God’s greatest creatures. I pray for the grace to learn the lessons of God’s love and the strength to show it, like Casey did, unconditionally.
Into Your hands I commend the spirit of my friend Casey. Deliver him, Lord our faithful God. The dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it. Thanks be to God. Amen.
